Cider Gum scientific name is Eucalyptus gunnii, is one of the most popular hardy varieties of eucalyptus. It is a small to medium-sized evergreen tree. It has a short, massive bole and large, spreading branches. The bark is always shedding, leaving patches of bark and smooth, yellowish white 'skin'. The leaves are stalked alternately and 8 cm long and 3 cm broad, grey-green or silvery and thick. The leaves become yellow in autumn. It blooms white flowers in mid-summer. It is very fast growing tree, grows up to 1.5 m (5 ft) per year. Cider Gum tree grows up to 121 ft (37 m) tall when matured. Pruning can be employed to maintain the tree as a small shrub if required and more shaded spots will restrict growth. People plant it in their garden as an ornamental tree. The plant produces a sweet sap similar to maple syrup, and is being considered for cultivation for this product.
